Olive Drab Technologies LLC

Olive Drab Technologies LLC

After serving 10 years in the U.S. Army, Sergeant First Class Damone Brown made a successful transition from military service to entrepreneurship. Today, he is the proud owner of Olive Drab Technologies LLC—a consulting firm with deep expertise in addressing asymmetric warfare, terrorism, and global security challenges.

Olive Drab Technologies brings together a team of strategic problem solvers who are grounded in shared core values and committed to delivering exceptional results. The company provides premier employee care, IT, and management solutions, helping organizations that support our Nation’s objectives navigate complex missions with clarity and strength.

With a fully operational business and a growing team of 5 full-time and 5 part-time employees, Damone has built a company that reflects the values, discipline, and mission-first mindset that defined his military career.

The foundation of Damone’s success lies in five key skills developed in the Army: leadership, teamwork, adaptability, discipline, and resilience. These qualities continue to guide him in navigating the business world. Leadership enables him to inspire and direct his team; teamwork drives collaboration; adaptability helps him manage change; discipline keeps him focused and efficient; and resilience pushes him to keep going, even in tough times.

Like many transitioning veterans, Damone initially faced challenges—chief among them a lack of formal business knowledge. “I did not have business acumen,” he says, “but I had the willingness to learn and ask the right questions.” That willingness opened doors to valuable resources through the Veterans Business Outreach Center (VBOC) and the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).

The Veterans Business Outreach Center at Fayetteville State University played a key role in Damone’s entrepreneurial growth. He participated in the center’s Entrepreneurial Boot Camp (EBC)—a hands-on, intensive training program designed to equip veterans and military spouses with the knowledge, tools, and confidence needed to launch and grow successful small businesses.

Damone also found the networking events and financial workshops to be especially impactful. These programs helped him identify growth opportunities, build a strong foundation for his business, and develop a strategic mindset.

It is vital to approach business ownership with a sense of corporate responsibility—to not only focus on your team but also on how your business can serve the community,” Damone shares.

His advice to aspiring veteran or military spouse entrepreneurs is both clear and inspiring:

Find a mentor. Always maintain the willingness to learn. Stay humble as you grow and continue to expand your vision as you shape your business to change the world.

When asked which SBA resource he recommends, Damone doesn’t hesitate:

Work with the Veterans Business Outreach Centers. And take advantage of every SBA resource available to you.

Damone’s journey with Olive Drab Technologies LLC is a powerful reminder that with the right mindset, support, and tools, veterans can build businesses that not only thrive—but also make a meaningful impact aligned with our Nation’s priorities.

The Morning Jump Coffee Shop

The Morning Jump Coffee Shop

Veteran Counseling Helps Retired Green Beret Start Drive-Through Coffee Shop

After retiring from active duty, Erik moved to Fort Lewis, near Tacoma, Washington, where he was introduced to the vibrant coffee culture of the Pacific Northwest. There, he noticed a growing trend: coffee shops with dual drive-through windows designed to serve the region’s busy commuters. Inspired by this concept, Erik and his family relocated to North Carolina, where they encouraged him to turn his passion for coffee into a business. His goal was simple: to create a coffee shop that would serve the soldiers in his community.

At Morning Jump Coffee, Erik and his team serve up delicious, fresh brews to jump-start your day! The drive-thru coffee shop is a veteran-owned and operated business that proudly serves Fort Bragg—the home of the 82nd Airborne Division and Special Operations Forces. The shop was established to honor and serve the soldiers Erik is so grateful for.

Navigating his transition out of the military, Erik sought guidance from the Veterans Business Outreach Center (VBOC) at Fayetteville State University. With their support, Erik developed a comprehensive business plan and completed an accounting software course to better manage his finances.

With help from his VBOC counselors, Erik was referred to a Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI), which assisted him in securing the financing needed to start his business, including access to SBA loans. In 2014, Morning Jump Coffee Company successfully obtained a loan through the SBA Community Advantage Program, providing the financial foundation to launch his dream.

Like many small business owners, Erik faced several challenges. The opening of the business was delayed due to issues with the custom-built coffee shop structure and zoning complications, which led to unexpected construction costs. Then, after a year in operation, road construction in the area caused disruptions that affected local businesses, with many struggling to stay open. Despite these obstacles, Morning Jump Coffee Company remained resilient.

Without the SBA and CSDF loan, we would not have been able to get the business off the ground,” Erik says. “These programs are an incredible resource for veterans, helping them navigate the challenges of starting a business after military service.

The Morning Jump Coffee Company is now thriving, proof that with determination, the right support, and a clear vision, veterans can build successful businesses that serve their communities and contribute to the economy.

Bravery Kids Gym

Bravery Kids Gym

Bravery Kids Gym located at 886-A Elm St, Fayetteville NC is an inclusive indoor play facility that offers a fun, safe, and stimulating learning environment to promote childhood development through play. They cater to children with special needs and typically developing children ages 0-10.

The Veterans Business Outreach Center (VBOC) assisted us with developing our business plan, understanding different types of funding programs, and ultimately putting us in contact with a funding source that approved us for an SBA loan. The VBOC continues to provide assistance and counseling in all areas of business and is always there to answer any questions we may have. They send us monthly information on funding opportunities, and free business courses relevant to growing our business.

I would advise other veterans transferring into entrepreneurship to have a group of business counselors to consult with and never be afraid to ask questions and seek out advice. Also, start your business with a strong foundation. Do the necessary work during the planning and development phase of your business to alleviate unexpected circumstances during operation.

Like many small business owners, the journey hasn’t been without its challenges. The BBQ industry, especially in the heart of the BBQ belt, is highly competitive. Statistically, about 90% of those who enter this field struggle to maintain their business for more than a year. Yet, for Bob, this challenge is a driving force that fuels his passion and determination.

Starting a small business is very challenging and takes a lot of work,” Bob says. “But what keeps me going is the opportunity to educate my customers and share my passion for BBQ with them.

Thanks to his commitment to quality and innovation, Bob has never viewed others in the BBQ industry as competitors. Instead, he focuses on educating consumers through tastings at shows, in his client’s venues, and by sharing valuable insights on social media. He believes in showcasing the quality of his product rather than criticizing others.

The Veterans Business Outreach Center (VBOC) played a crucial role in helping Bob avoid common pitfalls many small businesses face. Through VBOC’s Entrepreneurial Boot Camp (EBC), Bob gained invaluable insights into structuring and growing a sustainable business. He also benefited from the real-life experiences shared by fellow students, instructors, and guest speakers, which were instrumental in shaping the execution of his business plan.

The VBOC provided a strong foundation for building my business and avoiding typical startup mistakes,” Bob shares. “Their knowledge and support were indispensable in helping me navigate the early stages of my journey.

For anyone considering starting their own business, Bob has this advice:

Consider the VBOC as an ongoing resource and take advantage of their programs and expertise. Stay focused, stay positive, and always keep moving forward. Don’t worry about what others are doing—just keep doing the work. The rewards far outweigh the risks if you're willing to put in the effort.

Today, Bob's Smokin Southern BBQ continues to grow, expanding its reach to new customers and delighting BBQ lovers with its signature products. Bob’s story serves as a reminder that with determination, the right resources, and a passion for what you do, it’s possible to thrive in a competitive industry.
